Shocked and disappointed that I didn’t book this one instead - I think I thought it was right on the road, but it isn’t. Right at the intersection of Hwy 87 & 16, we noticed an RV park called Rafter J Bar.we decided to drive through it on our last day, and wished we had stayed here - it was gorgeous, with large sites and a huge meadows in the middle of the campground. On another note, I had done so much research to find a nice spot to camp while we were here, and had trouble finding anything really nice online, so I picked this place for location more than anything. There are also multiple options for sleeping cabins and cottages, which can sleep from 3-8. My partner confirmed this as well - and then we realized, the people next to us had just finished dumping their sewer. A tent site with all the services, RV 50 AMP E/W/S, around peak season is only 55. But in the morning, I thought ‘something smells funny’ and when I went to brush my teeth - BLECK - what happened? The water is DISGUSTING. We had full hookups, and the first time I used the water to brush my teeth in our camper it was fine. Every night, a family of deer wandered through the campsite, so that was nice! Now the part that still concerns me. The camp store had a decent amount of supplies and you could have fires, which was nice. The showers and bathrooms were clean, but very old. It is in a central location for getting to all these places. Location is very good - right in the heart of all the sites - close to hill city, Crazy Horse, Mt Rushmore, Wind Cave NP, Custer State Park, etc. These were the reasons I originally picked it - I don’t want to hear cars all night while I am trying to sleep. It was strange! Well, Horse Thief is not much different, definitely a family run operation, but larger than most and off the main highway. You drive by A TON of these tiny places right off the road, where there is a house, a barn and about 10 camping spots. In the Black Hills of South Dakota, everyone just adds a small RV park to their property.
